The trip insurance was not expensive ($50 I think) and since in the past we have traveled with someone who had a major medical issue two days prior to a trip, (we did not buy it here, and was about a 5k mistake for our travel mates) we now buy it most times. I used my credit card and never had a problem. It took us a bit longer to find what we wanted, but we knew for it to work, one bathroom was not enough.īy the time I got the deposit being due, I was very comfortable that I was dealing with good people and had in all cases numerous e-mails and questions answered. On one trip we had my two 20 something boys and we wanted two bedrooms and two baths. In most cases we have been emailed info too make sure we have all the codes/keys down to get in to the place.ĥ) Look closely at the floor plan and bedrooms to make sure it meets your needs. VRBO has an app that give you a ton of info. People who do this well have it down and the process is easy, if you follow their directions. Do the fix it right away, or does it take for ever? Are they responsive? To me very important and you can see how they handle things in properties that have more reviewsģ) How quickly does the owner communicate with you? In all the units we have rented, they have been super responsive.Ĥ) Read their reviews to see if there are any issues with check in and check out. Even in the nicest of places, things break or go wrong. Although I saw some new listings that looked great, they lacked of reviews and this made me nervous.Ģ) Read the reviews to see if they have a local management company and how they handle issues with the property when you are there. In all case it was much cheaper than hotel options.ġ) Only rent when there are multiple reviews with very high marks all around. At first I was skeptical, but spent a lot of time reading and viewing properties. I have used VRBO and Trip Advisor 3 times to do this. I break a glass or get blood on a towel, they are not charging me for it because they have a business model with internalized wear and tear in the prices. But then we only need a room and like the flexibility and worry free process for a hotel. I have not ever used vrbo or airbnb for all those reasons. they advertised with and the description just in case. If they want you to wire money I personally would never NOT use a credit card in case it was a total scam or I had a serious dispute that they did not provide what was advertised. With kids you probably will end up in a condo but try vrbo instead of airbnb. All those rentals you have to pay well in advance usually and then they try to get you to "buy insurance" in case you need to cancel so they need not refund you. With a hotel, you pay a night or 2 and typically can cancel until quite close to the day of arrival. I personally would not choose to entrust my money and vacation to someone who does that.Īnother thing to consider is payments. Unless the airbnb is in a "resort area" such as Waikoloa Resort or Mauna Lani Resort it is probably a zoning violation and maybe a tax one too.
